Producing prototypes which are an accurate representation of a production part can be quite difficult.  The prototype may need to be produced using different methods or materials than would be used for full scale production.  This is also the time to discover where problems might lie in manufacturing, assembly, packaging, or delivering your product.  Many, many examples exist of good, excellent, even groundbreaking designs which failed in the market place due to manufacturing problems.
